The majority of shoes sold in the United States are difficult to recycle. Okabashi is working hard to close the loop on shoe recycling. In doing so, they are reducing their reliance on virgin material and keeping old shoes from landfill.

Okabashi has been making shoes in America since the 1980s. Their motto is “Happiness one step at a time, with American-made comfort.”

Not only are their shoes designed with the planet in mind, but they’re also designed with foot therapy in mind. Providing comfort and support to your feet is important to them too.

Plus, if you return your well-loved and worn shoes to their factory, they will recycle them. Shoes that are free from contamination are recycled for use in new Oka-B products. Shoes with contaminants are processed and recycled for use in non-apparel goods.

Okabashi: Recycled Material

Their shoes and sandals contain an average of 25% recycled plastic. The recycled material gets mixed into a proprietary, recyclable material that is made with about 40% US-grown soy. It is classified as Vegan and is also BPA, latex, and phthalate-free.

Closing the Loop

We love that Okabashi offers shoe recycling. Their used shoes and pre-consumer scrap materials are ground and used in their new shoes. Through this process, they save about 100 tons of scrap material from heading to landfill every year.

You can return your old worn shoes to their factory and they will recycle them for you. Plus, you get a 15% off promo code to use in their store.

Other Kudos

  • Their shoes are locally made to order to reduce any environmental impact.
  • Their vegan bio-based material is Made in the USA.

  • To prove it, they offer a two-year guarantee on their shoes.
  • Their shoes are also very easy to clean, helping them to last even longer.
  • Okabashi has partnered with the local non-profit organization Soles4Souls for more than ten years. They donate shoes to help survivors of natural disasters. Plus, they assist micro-entrepreneurs in developing escape poverty.
