What’s in a name, you might ask? Well, there are 10 trees in Tentree’s name. What their name means is that they will plant 10 trees for every product you buy.
Back in 2012, the founders of Tentree decided to start a clothing brand that gave back. Like many startups, they started in the basement, but it wasn’t long before they expanded. They even managed an appearance on the Canadian version of Dragon’s Den and were nominated as one of the top 10 Game Changers for the season.
By March 2014, Tentree had planted 1 million trees; by 2017, it was up to 15 million trees. Today they have planted over 53 million trees. With a goal of 1 billion trees by 2030, there’s no reason they won’t achieve this. As they grew, they continued to look for more sustainable options to challenge the industry and make more sustainable clothing.
Tentree makes earth-first essentials made from organic and recycled materials, including recycled polyester, Tencel, hemp, and organic cotton. Their products range from loungewear to activewear for women, men, and your little ones. Think hoodies, casual pants, t-shirts, and stylish jumpsuits.
They believe we have a responsibility to protect the world we live in. Choosing to buy sustainably is a great place to start.

Other Kudos
- Tentree partners with charities like Eden Projects, Trees for the Future, and One Tree Planted to plant trees, rehabilitate natural ecosystems, and reduce extreme poverty.
- Phasing out single-use plastics is high on their list, with the goal of eliminating virgin packaging altogether by 2023. They are not just looking at the customer packaging but also targeting all packaging from their suppliers.
- Their high standards are not limited to their fabrics. Tentree values respect the people who make their clothes. They only partner with factories that meet the highest standards for ethical labor rights. Their partners are regularly audited for compliance.
- Transparency is a key part of their process. You will find a factory ledger on their site listing all of their factories, locations they have visited, and when the last third-party audit was undertaken. Companies often describe transparency as one of their values but provide no detailed information. These guys are great.
