WharfWarp takes old lobster ropes and transforms them into gorgeous mats, wreaths, pet leashes, and other products for your home.

They are based in Maine, an area that is known for its rocky coastline and lobster fishing. In 2016, the husband and wife team behind WharfWarp collected some unwanted rope and created a few products to sell at markets. They were such a hit they were encouraged to give it a go.

They didn’t hold back; they took on a pile of rope from a 2009 buyback program. The buyback required local fishermen to restrict float rope use due to its impact on endangered right whales, with a risk of them getting entangled in the rope. Although a necessary change to protect ocean wildlife, it’s estimated to have resulted in almost 30,000 miles of float rope being removed and discarded.

The rope pile that WharfWarp took possession of was a massive 12 tons of rope. They untangled it, sorted it, and then started making their amazing products. As of the end of 2019, they had upcycled 151,303 feet of rope into usable products. That’s over 28 miles of rope and about 4,3539 pounds. What an achievement!

Take a look below at their wonderful products. Their products range from mats and wreaths to bracelets and even pet leashes. Unfortunately, they only ship within the United States so the international folk will just have to admire them.
